‘The Avengers’ Continues to Dominate With $1 Billion at Box Office
Just 19 days after its first theatrical release, the Disney flick reached another milestone by raking in $1 billion globally — making it the first time to reach nine digits in its second domestic weekend. The film had already previously broke the mold by beating out Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2‘s top spot for the biggest opening of all time.
What does this new record-breaking number entail?
For one, The Avengers will be back for more as studio head Bob Iger recently announced a sequel to the blockbuster. The follow-up will start filming after the release of the third Iron Man movie and Thor sequel in 2013 and Captain America’s newest installment in 2014.
The Avengers now joins Avatar, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King as the selected few who has hit has hit the billion dollar mark globally.
