In the latest issue of  The Hollywood Reporter, cover girl Christina Hendricks, 37, says she was initially surprised when people started referring to her Mad Men character, Joan Holloway, as empowering. The reason? Christina actually thought Joan was "such a bitch."

"I struggled sometimes trying to make her as real as possible," she said, recalling the earlier days of the Emmy-winning series. "Because I thought, 'Who would be so mean?'"

Of course, Joan has come a long way from season 1, when she reigned over the secretaries in a sometimes terrifying manner.

SPOILER ALERT: Just this past season, Joan, using her, um, best assets, was able to climb her way to the partners' table at Sterling Cooper Draper Price, in one of the show's most shocking and talked about episodes ('The Other Woman').

Similar to character Joan's evolution, Hendricks has also come a long way. In addition to nabbing two Emmy nominations for her work on the AMC series, she also landed key roles in films like Life As We Know It and last year's critically acclaimed drama Drive, opposite Ryan Gosling.

Now, as she looks towards her future, Hendricks says she already has her eye on one famous director.

"I’d love to do a Woody Allen movie," she said.

The season 5 finale of Mad Men airs Sunday night on AMC.
