Anna Nicole Smith's Daughter Dannielynn Is As Well-Adjusted As She Can Be, Says Father Larry Birkhead (VIDEO)
Larry Birkhead visited Good Morning America on Monday to give an update on his five-year-old daughter, Dannielynn, and how she's coping with the death of her mother, Anna Nicole Smith.
"She's as well-adjusted as she can be," he said of his daughter, who turns six in September. "She just worries about her toys and where she's going and where I'm gonna take her. I do all the shielding and the worrying for her, and the protecting."
Smith died on February 8, 2007. Around that time, Dannielynn was at the center of a long and heated custody battle to determine the identity of her father, which was later confirmed to be Birkhead by a DNA paternity test.
Now, as Dannielynn gets a little older, Birkhead said he is trying to guide her through life as safely as he can.
"I hope that she understands that no one's perfect, and that people have triumphs and tragedies," he said. "Her mom really soldiered on; she came from nothing and lived her dream."
"I also want to make things a cautionary tale, and give her the tools that she needs to where she has the opportunities that her mother and her son Daniel won't have," she said. (Smith's son, Daniel, died of a drug overdose, about a week after Smith gave birth to Dannielynn.)
"It's hard to move on," he continued, "because you have this little 47-pound reminder of her mother walking around, and you have all of these images that are still very much alive that you have to deal with it ... and you want to. I want to keep Anna's image alive in a positive way."
