Katy Perry‘s life may have once seemed like a fairy tale but in her new video for the song “Wide Awake,” the 27-year-old pop star is reminding us all it’s no longer like that.
The recently divorced former wife of Russell Brand kicks off the video on the set of her “California Gurls” clip.
But once the Grammy-award winner takes off her pink wig, things take a dark and mythical turn.
Is it a case of art imitating life?
“I’m wide awake. I was in the dark, I was falling hard with an open heart. How did I read the stars so wrong. I was dreaming for so long. I wish I knew then what I know now. I wouldn’t dive in, I wouldn’t bow down,” she sings in the song.
In an interview with MTV on Monday, Perry admitted “Wide Awake” is indeed a dose of reality.
“It’s kind of like coming down from a high,” Perry revealed.
“You’ve been on cloud nine for so long and it can’t always be so sweet and sometimes you need to realize that.
“You have to pick yourself up and move forward and face the facts of life and know that this is just a lesson you learn and you’re stronger because of it.”
Other highlights of the video, include: A child version of Perry, photographers snapping her through a mirror, Perry in a wheelchair, then a magical garden, an evil prince on a unicorn — and much more.
As the video goes on, it shows the younger and older singer take over and regain “power” in their lives.
One part even shows the two finding a beautiful land and the wiser and older Perry getting rid of a Prince Charming-type character, possibly a metaphor for Perry not needing a man in her life.
It marks Perry’s first time addressing the divorce in song.
Despite the messaging in “Wide Awake” that she’s happy to be single, Perry was been linked to a number of men since her split with Brand, including model Baptiste Giabconi back in March and Florence and the Machine rocker Robert Ackroyd at Coachella, the popular music festival, in April.
The pair was later photographed in London.
