’50 Shades of Grey’ Bashes? Celebrity Party Planner Mindy Weiss Reveals New Craze (EXCLUSIVE)
Celebrity event planner and Skinnygirl Cocktail ambassador Mindy Weiss — who has overseen bashes for Jessica Simpson, Katy Perry and Fergie — has revealed to Celebuzz that she’s in the midst of planning a 50 Shades of Grey-themed party. If you’re not familiar with it, 50 Shades of Grey is an erotic novel written by E L James that centers on a recent college grad named Anastasia Steele and her relationship with a mysterious billionaire named Christian Grey.
What exactly does a 50 Shades of Grey party entail?
Read on for Celebuzz’s full Q&A with Weiss:
Who came to you about doing a 50 Shades of Grey party?
One of my clients — one of the ladies doing a ladies’ party. Because they’re all obsessed with the book. And it’s just the women, and they’re going to talk about sex and the book. It’s a dinner party [but there will be dancing], and it’s women only. And we’re [incorporating] the ties! Can you imagine? I had just finished the book, or I would not know anything that she was talking about. But of course, I took it to a new level, and she was like, ‘Hold back! Hold back!’ [laughs]
What are the best ways to incorporate Skinnygirl Cocktails into any party?
She’s having all the girls [over] and we’re only serving Skinnygirl, because you know they have all the different combinations, so we’re doing all the [different kinds]. I’m so excited [that] I’m doing a 50 Shades of Grey party — I swear to God. And I’m doing all shades of grey. I got a call and literally almost started crying, and I said, ‘I want to do this party so bad!’
Right [laughs]. And when I recommended the Skinnygirl thing … [the client] went nuts. She didn’t want to incur the whole cost of the full bar, and it just had everything that went with the party. A lot of my female parties, whether it’s the bridal showers, baby showers — whatever it is — the Skinnygirl thing just works. It’s priced right, looks right, and it’s calorie-right.
The 50 Shades of Grey party sounds fun, but what kind of bashes do you most enjoy planning?
I do mostly weddings. We do everything, but I am obsessed with mostly showers. I just love a bridal shower, a baby shower — I think maybe because I can kind of do more cute, thematic kinds of things during the day and get the nights off. It’s not a stressful time. A lot of times with the weddings [and] bar mitzvahs, people feel a little anxious. So that’s why I just love the showers, because [the clients] aren’t as consumed about the party. [They’re more] excited about what’s going on. Those are my favorites.
What’s the most over-the-top party you’ve ever thrown?
I did a wedding for like 600 — it was 10 years ago. My instructions were that the minute [the bride and groom] get out of the car to the minute they leave, they will never stop looking at flowers. So it was just a garden of continuous, ridiculous flowers. I think that was my most over-the-top because it was never enough. Now, as the years pass, it’s all about being more refined. The budgets don’t really change because sometimes it’s a little more expensive to make it look a little more ‘less.’ It’s weird, but sometimes that happens. And now everything is just such a better time. And as much as you read about people going over the top, even celebs really don’t — it’s just more refined.
What’s the average price of a celebrity wedding?
Well, it’s hard to say. I would say the average price of my weddings for anybody is about $250,000. But celebrities can be … like any of my other clients. It’s all about what they want. There’s no average for a wedding because everybody has different priorities. They can bring in Dom Perignon, or they could want a 50-piece band. So I don’t think celebrities are different from a normal person. You have to add on for security — that would be your only difference. They want what we want — because they’re a celebrity doesn’t change the mushiness of it.
