Matthew McConaughey on Proposing to Wife Camila Alves: Her First Answer Was Not 'Yes' (VIDEO)
Although Matthew McConaughey's recent wedding to Camila Alves went off without a hitch, in a lavish, 72-hour ceremony, the Magic Mike star admits that getting her to say "yes" to his marriage proposal was a little more difficult.
"At Christmas time, we go around our family and everyone takes turns opening presents," McConaughey, 42, revealed Monday on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. "So I had wrapped the engagement ring in about eight different boxes deep, so she would keep opening boxes to get with it."
What did Alves say when she saw the ring?
"We finally got to her, and I'm calling my family over ... She gets to it, she opens it up, her eyes go wide. I take a knee and I ask her, 'Will you marry me and take my name?'"
"The first words out of her mouth were not yes," he added. "I'm not gonna say what it was. But I did say, 'Look, I'm down on a knee. I'll stay here awhile. I will outlast you.' And I did! She conceded."
With Alves' official concession, the now-married couple -- who have two children together, son Levi, 3, and daughter Vida, 2 -- were able to put together one of the most memorable celebrity weddings in recent years, all of which was covered in last week's issue of PEOPLE.
"We put 40 tents up in the year," McConaughey said. "This is was her idea. She said, 'I want to build a village. I want all of our friends and family to come here, stay for three full days, have an experience with us, so they can really remember this weekend.'"
"He gave us a sword, and with a big card that says, 'For the couple that has everything. Swing your sword!'"
