Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Divorce: 7 Developments So Far In Their Shocking Split
Many questions and developments have come to light after A-list couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes announced their split on June 29.
Holmes, 33, filed for divorce from the 49-year-old Rock of Ages star in New York City this Friday after five-and-a-half years of marriage. Between their $275 million combined net worth and their lavish shared properties across the globe, the estranged couple -- and their lawyers -- have plenty to talk about before putting their fallen marriage behind them.
What was the cause of the split? Will Cruise or Holmes get custody of Suri Cruise?
Read on for new developments about their divorce.
1.) Holmes filed for sole custody of the couple's only child.
The Batman Begins actress is seeking primary custody of the couple's six-year-old daughter Suri, according to TMZ. Holmes cites the "irreconcilable differences" as the cause of split and is asking for "primary residential custody" of Suri.
2.) Filing for divorce in New York was a strategic move.
According to New York law, a judge has the discretion to consider causes for a marriage coming to an end, including disagreements over how to raise a child. A source close to the situation tells Radar Online that Holmes filed for the split -- and for Suri's sole custody -- in the Big Apple for that specific reason alone, saying, "Allegations of cheating or verbal/physical abuse are taken very seriously in New York and can be determining factors in custody and support issues."
3.) Cruise and Holmes were distant in the days leading up to the divorce -- literally.
While Holmes was in New York readying her divorce papers this week, Cruise was busy filming his latest movie, Oblivion, in Iceland. Celebuzz obtained photos of the actor -- taken this Wednesday -- sporting a silver space suit on the set of the new sci-fi flick.
According to the couple's pre-nuptial agreement, Holmes will receive $3 million for every year she was married to Cruise -- racking up to an approximate $15 million settlement. The actress, who wed Cruise in Italy on November 18, 2006, will also be given the couple's Montecito, Calif., mansion, Reuters reports.
5.) Religion may have played a role in the split.
"I don’t think you can discuss his relationships without questioning whether his utter devotion to the Church of Scientology has an impact on his relationships,” Rachel A. Sussman — the author of The Breakup Bible – told Celebuzz of the divorce. "When someone is super religious, it could cause discord in a marriage if the person you are married to does not share the same religious or philosophical devotion."
6.) Cruise is "saddened" by the divorce.
A rep for the actor confirmed the news of break-up to Celebuzz, saying, "Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children." Cruise has one child with Holmes and currently shares custody of daughter Isabella, 19, and son Connor, 17, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.
7.) Their marriage didn't have a rocky start. In fact, Cruise and Holmes were "madly in love" from the beginning.
Celebrity photographer Robert Evans, who documented the former couple's nuptials at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy, told Celebuzz that Cruise and Holmes were "madly in love" at the Scientology wedding ceremony, adding, "I always want my wedding couples to live happily ever, after celebrity or not. I am always a bit saddened when I hear my couples have split up."
