While the censors had a hard time keeping up with the incredible amount of cursing at the BET Awards, the cable network would probably want viewers to most remember the big names who were in attendance.

Samuel L. Jackson hosted from Los Angeles and the evening’s A-List award winners included Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Kanye West (who attended with girlfriend Kim Kardashian), Viola Davis and Chris Brown (who also performed).

There were also several tributes to the legends we’ve lost in the last year, including Donna Summers, Nick Ashford, Don Cornelius, Dick Clark, Hal Jackson and one for Whitney Houston led by her mother, soul and gospel great Cissy Houston, with Mariah Carey, Monica, Brandy, Chaka Khan and Whitney’s brother, Gary Houston.

The night’s performers included Melanie Fiona, Yolanda Adams, D’Angelo, Big Sean, Usher and Nicki Minaj.
