Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Divorce Fallout: 7 New Developments
With a divorce attorney already on tap, Holmes is readying for what could be a contentious custody battle over Suri. In the meantime, the former Dawson’s Creek star seems to be relishing her new single life in her luxury Chelsea apartment.
As fallout continues, Celebuzz tallies up the latest need-to-know news in the TomKat divorce.
1. The estranged exes are not speaking.
Cruise has had zero contact with Holmes since she filed on June 28; he does, however, talk to their 6-year-old daughter, Suri, by phone at least once a day.
2. Cruise had a “somber” 50th birthday.
The Mission: Impossible star was set to spend his July 3 birthday with his third wife and Suri in NYC. But the actor had to amend his plans after Holmes’ June 28 divorce filing. After leaving Iceland — where he was shooting the new sci-fi thriller, Oblivion — Cruise quietly celebrated his 50th birthday with his two kids with ex-wife Nicole Kidman, Bella, 19, Connor, 17, and other family members at his Beverly Hills, California, mansion.
3. Holmes denies filing for emergency custody of Suri.
Contrary to rumors earlier this week, Holmes’ lawyer refutes reports that the actress is seeking an emergency hearing on custody and child support. "Other than her action for divorce, the only pending application filed by Ms. Holmes remains her request for an anonymous caption," her Jonathan Wolfe said of her legal papers, in which she asks for sole legal custody of Suri.
4. Holmes spoke out about Cruise divorce.
Well, sort of. While out running errands with Suri in NYC, the actress and fashion designer told a New York Daily News reporter, “I’m all right — thank you.”
5. The split may have been a long time coming for Holmes.
In an interview with Elle magazine that will hit stands July 17, Holmes hinted at the split by saying she's ushering in "a new phase. I definitely feel more comfortable in my own skin. I feel sexier.... I'm starting to come into my own."
6. The niece of Cruise’s best man supports Holmes.
Jenna Miscavige Hill, estranged niece of Scientology church leader David Miscavige, reportedly released a statement on her website wishing Holmes “the strength she will need to do what is best for her and her daughter.” David Miscavige served as the best man at Cruise and Holmes' wedding.
7. Cruise has yet to file any legal papers.
The actor, who was just named by Forbes as Hollywood's highest-paid actor, reportedly wants to file in Los Angeles, which he considers his home, rather than in New York. Though the couple owned an apartment in the Big Apple, it was primarily used for work purposes.
