Haley Reinhart may not have been the winner of American Idol’s season 10 — she placed third in the competition — but the fan favorite says her early departure was an overall “lesson learned.”

“I know that I got some harsh criticism,” Reinhart, 21, told Celebuzz in an exclusive interview. “[The judges] knew that I was going to try and be a real, true artist, and I think they wanted to push and get anything out of me they could.”

“All in all, it put some layers of skin — a couple of extra layers — on me. It’s great experience.”

Though Idol opened up plenty for doors, including a guest appearance on The View this morning, would she have done anything differently?

“Not a thing different,” said Reinhart, shaking her head. “Even if it’s a mistake, it has led me to this perfect position that I’m in right now.”

That includes the release of her first solo album Listen Up!, which peaked at 17 on Billboard’s Top 200. She also reunited with fellow Idol alum Casey Abrams for a duet version of Percy Mayfield’s “Hit the Road, Jack.”

“I did the Conan show and went right to the studio with Casey,” she recalled of the recording process. “It was really nonchalant and very candid. We just went back and forth and did a couple of takes, and boom — he’s putting it on his album.”
