Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Divorce: Lawyers In Talks to Reach Settlement (REPORT)
According to TMZ, the estranged couple has stepped back and allowed their lawyers to negotiate a full divorce settlement, putting on hold any supposed plans the Rock of Ages actor’s had to move the proceedings to California.
Though Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Fields, recently took a swipe at Holmes’ legal team for “play[ing] the media,” reports say the current negotiations are relatively calm.
So what’s at stake behind closed doors?
Currently, both sides are negotiating the custody of the couple’s six-year-old daughter Suri, visitation rights, child support and a property settlement.
After five-and-a-half years of marriage, Holmes, 33, filed for divorce from Cruise, 50, in New York City on June 28 citing “irreconcilable difference.”
Per the couple’s pre-nuptial agreement, Holmes will receive $3 million for every year she was married to Cruise — racking up to an approximate $15 million settlement. The actress will also be given their mansion Montecito, Calif., reports Reuters.
Though the spotlight has been on Cruise and Holmes, who wed in Italy on November 18, 2006, for the last week, the actor himself has done little more than confess he was “deeply saddened” by the bombshell divorce announcement.
“It’s not Tom’s style to do this publicly,” Fields said about his client in a recent interview with BBC. “He is really sad about what’s happening.”
