Daniel Tosh Rape Joke Controversy: 10 More Outrageous Quotes On God, Sex and Women (PHOTOS)

he said what?!
Daniel Tosh: Most Raunchy Quotes
Tosh.0 star Daniel Tosh has recently come under fire for a controversial routine about rape at Los Angeles' Laugh Factory, but the incident wasn't the comic's first time trying to make light of a serious subject.

After an outspoken audience member vocalized their disdain for the material at his July 6th show, Tosh reportedly replied “Wouldn’t it be funny if that girl got raped by like, 5 guys right now? Like right now?”

Though critics have taken aim at Tosh for this particular joke, many fans jumped to his defense and noted that the 37-year-old comic's career has been riddled with zingers taking aim at religion, sex, women, and -- again -- rape.

So is Tosh's material funny, or did he really take it too far with the heckler? Launch the gallery to read more of comics past controversial quotes.

However, Tosh's jokes about controversial subjects aren't just limited to his stand-up sets, but also his own show on Comedy Central.

In a 2011 episode of Tosh.0, which actually drew the highest ratings of any cable show that night, Tosh makes a knife rape joke based on gory footage of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi's murder -- retooling it to be prank dubbed "Qaddafi'd."

Fellow comedians were quick to jump into Tosh's defense when he received backlash for his remarks.

“It’s a comedy show and it’s Daniel Tosh — you’re going to laugh and be offended at times, comes with the territory,” said Iliza Schlesinger, a regular headliner at West Hollywood’s Laugh Factory.

“You think Daniel doesn’t know rape is horrible? Most of comedy is based on something horrible,” Schlesinger told Celebuzz. “When that woman heckled him from the audience, the joke became less about rape and more about silencing an audience member who dared challenge him — something no comic would back down from. Rape isn’t funny. But, neither is heckling a comic.”

Since then, Tosh apologized for the joke, writing on his Twitter:

No comic should ever have to apologize for a joke. Apologizing for a joke admits what you said was serious and therefore does make it offensive, however, not apologizing would be a stronger point showing that comedy isn't something to be taken seriously and anyone who is offended by a joke is missing the point.

Absolutely love you Tosh !! Everything is on the line for comedians. All of the sick stuff in the world is going to be there whether or not people choose to laugh at it or not. Depends on how you were raised to look at life or how you learned to cope with life. Had lots of bad stuff happen to me, including rape. I choose to laugh at the sarcastic, morbid jokes. He is just a charming, sarcastic man who pretends to be the most insensitive ignorant person alive. It's an act! One that I find absolutely genius and funny.

As a woman who has no particularly strong feelings about Daniel Tosh's comedy one way or the other, I don't really see what the big deal is. He's a comedian who made a joke about a sensitive subject, color me shocked. No one would think twice about it if it were a joke about a man being raped. In fact people seem to find /those/ funny, which if you ask me, is a weird double standard. I can understand why that particular woman would be uncomfortable, since it was directed /at/ her, but people in general are make a shockingly big deal about it. The only problem I had with that joke was that it wasn't particularly clever or funny, The subject of it shouldn't really matter.

Doesn't Tosh's joke fall under the category of free speech too? Also how does pulling him off the air protect free speech? You just want to silence someone who is saying something you don't agree with. You are not interested in free speech. You are interested in your speech.

Excuse me, but is there something in the constitution that protects comedians from being heckled or denounced just because their comedians? I find this "well, he's a comedian" firewall a wall of Bull$hit. There is little objection when a politician (a sort of civil servant comedian) is booed for a speech. So Tosh a public figure who makes a nice living for being "edgy" can't take the heat, brave little man that he is? And his fans get cold water dumped on their glee in a rape joke!... so sorry frat boys for spoiling your show:( It's called free speech and I'm glad the woman asserted it and I hope this is the beginning of the free speech $hitstorm that gets him pulled off the air :)

just because you've been raped, doesn't mean you speak for everyone who's been raped, get it? being fat isn't the same as being raped. I doubt you were raped since you seem to compare it to completely irrelevant things. It's easy for some random douche to claim something happened to them, when in fact, it didn't. Take a look in the mirror buddy, you're a sheep too. Maybe when everyone understands rape, we might see less joking about it. I feel like wishing rape on all these ignorant fools, then they might shut the fuck up and understand why you don't joke about it. God, I swear, rape is a joke just because it happens so often to women. The moment it starts to happen more to men, people might start taking it seriously.

unlike most of the world, this woman actually decided to immediately stick up for what she believed in. The rest of the world just types behind a fucking monitor instead of dealing with the shit properly.

People need to stop being so f-ing sensitive. She disrupt the show, and Tosh is forced to apologize? If you heckle a comic you have to be prepared to have that comic tear you apart, not to mention make the rest of the audience hate you for trying to ruin the show.

Look, Rape isn't funny. But jokes about rape are because rape isn't funny. What is hilarious about Tosh is he claims that things that really are not funny are funny. And the ridiculousness of it all is what makes us laugh. Steven Colbert uses the same technique, just on a less taboo subject: Politics. The systematic corruption of our political system, pollution of our environment, and dis-empowerment of the poor. War, sex and slave trafficking, all these things are not funny. But when Steven Colbert talks about them as if it's to be celebrated, we all laugh, because that is ridiculous. This is why Tosh is funny. What is sais is extremely offensive, but that is his style. There is nothing wrong with it. Some people wont be able to handle it, but for goodness sake, the original joke did not deserve to be heckled. That said, his response was in poor taste.

Well, Ok. You are saying rape is not funny. How would you react if he said, "how would it be if a guy were to be beaten by 5 dudes? "Would you react to this level if a comedian asked this question?

lol @ ceecee. People like yourself are ruining the entire country. I've been a victim and can still make light of dark subjects, and snooty idiots like you can't even begin to imagine what it's like so don't then presume to police the world on what is okay to make light of. Sticking up for Tosh because speech is still protected (against the best efforts of self-righteous progressive snobs such as yourself) is absolutely the correct course of action. Because after rape jokes are disallowed, then come fat jokes, then gay jokes, then race jokes, then momma jokes etc. until nothing is okay because everything offends some wackjob who makes it a personal crusade to ruin someones life over a joke that they alone found distasteful. Also, she asked to be singled out when she attempted to turn a comedy show into an anti-rape rally. He was supposed to be talking and conveying funny thoughts, she was supposed to sit and watch or leave and ask to be refunded w/e; However by interrupting the show that EVERYONE else was enjoying, she invited him to make fun of her persnickety ass for taking herself so seriously as to assume that her opinion was more important than the show others paid to see. I sincerely hope that Comedy Central has more sense than to actually consider cancelling a multi-million dollar show with a very intelligent and FUNNY host due to some whiny petition with less than 5,000 signatures brought about by self-absorbed and self-entitled special interest crybabies who place their thoughts, feelings and opinions above all else; If you don't like him don't watch or buy tickets to his shows, but don't ruin it for everyone else because your heads are so far up your own butts sniffing your own farts and your tastes supercede and are superior to those of popular culture and therefore take presedence. Get a life sheeple.

wow, you are such an idiot do you know that? saying what he said to her was fkn inapporiate and also extremly harsh and out of context, you should NEVER say something like that to someone. Rape is a serious matter and is absolutely terrible, he is a comedian and sure its his jobs to make jokes, but that sir is not even funny, not even a little bit. babes, she may like his usual comedic routines but how was she to know he was going to bring up such a horrible topic and try and make people laugh about it? She should keep her thoughts to herself? maybe HE should have kept his disgusting thought to himself. he is a pig, and the fact your saying rape is bad then sticking up for the loser is so disgusting and backhanded. He ought to change jobs, he isnt funny, he is a gronk.. and you sir, are a heartless monster. have fun sucking up to this moron all your life. xxxx

if everyone loves his wacked humour then why would even his fans be slamming him about the joke? hes a loser with no life, if he made jokes about funny things then he is doing is joke right, joking about rape? not fkn funny at all, he either wanted this controversy or he was just so stupid and thought he'd get away with this and people would just laugh along, no mate no, your pathetic go get another job. and LOL your just as idiotic as Tosh.

What did this silly bitch expect to happen? She knew what kind of comedian Daniel Tosh was, she's seen his show. She bought the ticket, now it's time to suck it up and take the ride. While I agree that rape is not funny, jokes are. That's why they call them jokes. This was not a town hall symposium for the free flow of progressive idealism. This was a comedy performance at a place called the motherfucking "Laugh Factory." If she was offended by what Tosh said, she should have kept it to herself, or at least waited until she got home so she could blog about it while crying through The Color Purple for the 40th time. I'm pretty sure that Tosh didn't come to her kitchen and slap the sandwich out of her hand, so why in the fuck is she bothering him at work? What did she think would happen if she interrupted a performer in the middle of a set? Did she think he would just stop his routine and have a heartfelt discussion about women's rights and their struggles against the misogynistic viewpoints that have dominated our culture for millennia? Of course not, she disrupted his show and whined about a rape joke, so he, logically, made another joke just like it featuring her as the centerpiece in an involuntary gangbang. This hurt her little feelings, and now, because of one whiny slag, the rest of us get to see an edited version of Tosh's new show, "Brickleberry." I'm sure there is a exciting position just waiting for her at the MPAA or the Ministry of Truth.

Anyone that uses rape as joke material in ANY way has absolutely no regard the severity of this subject and the damage it inflicts on others for not just days, but numerous years later... Any comedian that comes to his defense is only adding fuel to the fire on a subject that has devastating affects on people and their family and they should be ashamed for backing someone that obviously has NO regard for this subject... There is NOTHING funny about rape and to say "wouldn't it be funny"... IT WOULDN"T.... If someone has an issue with being heckled they need to grow thick skin. Heckling happens and he is a comedian and needs to get over it. If he doesn't like it or can't handle it he needs to go into a different profession but above all that woman did not deseserve that. What if that woman HAD been raped previously?!?! I will NEVER watch this comedian and will encourage others to do the same...

Can't fucking believe CC made him apologize. That ignorant woman said she felt she had to say something on behalf of women. That makes me, a woman, fucking sick. I'm fucking ill of self-righteous hypocrites saying what you can and can't make jokes about. Tosh is crass, he takes things to that level, that's why he's funny and that's why people love him. If you come to a comedy club and begin to make a joke SERIOUS, you are the one at fault, NOT the comedian.

  • ceecee

He is an idiot straightout, i dont know how he or anyone else finds his pathetic jokes at all funny. he just starts talking about things like this but he is too stupid to make up something not overly effence that is actually funny. Tosh should either comeup with jokes about his life and such like REAL,FUNNY comedians with brains do, or just drop out of comedy all together. one way or the other buddy!!

"I did it because, even though being “disruptive” is against my nature, I felt that sitting there and saying nothing, or leaving quietly, would have been against my values as a person and as a woman. I don’t sit there while someone tells me how I should feel about something as profound and damaging as rape." She should have just left if she felt uncomfortable and saved her opinions for an appropriate venue or medium...such as her blog. What did she think was going to happen?
