Most actors would be at least a bit nervous about stepping into the boots of a well-known character from DC Comics and Smallville. But The CW’s handsome new Arrow lead Stephen Amell didn’t feel that much pressure at all.

It helps to be busy. “I didn’t have any time to think about it,” Amell, 31, tells reporters at San Diego Comic-Con. “I had all this super-intensive training. I was meeting people, I was meeting crew and I was meeting cast and I was in a new city.”

It also doesn’t hurt to have friends in high places. Who had  the actor’s back?

The pilot’s director David Nutter made sure the Toronto native felt supported through the process.

Amell recounts the story: “He sat me down and said, ‘Listen, I’ve directed a ton of pilots. I directed the pilot for Smallville. I was the one who told the studio and the network that Tom Welling was my guy. And he said, ‘I’m going to do the same thing for you.’”

“So, I didn’t have a need to feel any pressure,” he goes on to say. “Because, I felt very safe.”

That’s a pretty good endorsement, eh? Watch the star tell the full story above.

Arrow premieres Wednesday, Oct. 10 on The CW.
