Mariah Carey is on her way to a judging spot on FOX’s American Idol.

According to Deadline, the 42-year-old pop R&B singer is negotiating for one of the seats recently vacated by Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

Carey would reportedly come on at $17 million for her first season, which would beat the $15 million that JLo earned in her first season. Although, Lopez reportedly made $20 million plus bonuses her second season on the panel.

Carey, who has professional ties to lone standing judge Randy Jackson, would definitely be a boost to the show that found itself out of the running for an Emmy on Thursday in addition to seeing its lowest ratings of all time during its last season’s finale.

Though, FOX may have to deal with the wrath of Simon Cowell who booked Carey as a mentor on the first season of The X Factor only to have her cancel after weather conditions kept her from flying out for the shoot.

Over the more than two decades of her career, Carey has sold more than 200 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. And the five-octave-range singer has won five Grammy Awards.

Lopez and Tyler both dropped out of the show last week. She cited a desire to focus on other projects while he said he wanted to get back to working solely with his band Aerosmith.

FOX tells Celebuzz it has no comment on Carey joining Idol.
