NBC is throwing its hat into the vampire genre with a new series based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, Dracula.

“In the world of Twilight and True Blood and all the contemporized stories, we thought we’d go back to the original,” NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt told reporters on Tuesday during the TCA Press tour.

With a 10-episode order, the period supernatural series will star The Tudors actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers. No other casting news is available at this time.

The series, which begins when Dracula arrives in London, comes from the producers behind Downton Abbey — which may explain the time and setting of the story. He pretends to be an American entrepreneur who wants to help usher new technology to the Victorian age. But really, he wants revenge on those that ruined his life years ago.

Dracula does hit a road bump in his journey to revenge. Not unlike The Vampire Diaries on The CW, he will get sidelined when he meets s woman who seems to be the reincarnation of his wife. Elena, much?

Aside from The Tudors, filmgoers will remember Meyers from his numerous films, including Match Point, Bend It Like Beckham and Velvet Goldmine.
