The body count keeps climbing on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy as Doctor McSteamy actor Eric Dane follows Chyler Leigh and Kim Raver out the door.

What did the actor have to say about his impending departure?

“I am extremely grateful to everyone at Grey’s, ABC and Shondaland for the experience and memories I have had over the course of this run,” Dane, 39, tells TVLine. “It has been wonderful to work alongside and learn from a creative force such as Shonda Rhimes.”

Apparently, the actor wants to pursue other opportunities after playing plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Sloan on the medical drama since 2006. The impending departure seems to be an amicable one.

“[Dane] did not come to this decision lightly,” show creator Shonda Rhimes says. “But after much consideration and conversations, he and I have decided that this is the right time for his storyline to end.”

When viewers last saw Sloane, he watched as Lexie (Leigh) died from injuries sustained in a plane crash. But, that’s not how we’ll say goodbye to him. Dane will appear on the upcoming ninth season for several episodes to wrap up his storyline.

While three people are leaving the show, Friday Night Lights alum Gaius Charles and True Blood actress Camilla Luddington will join the medical drama as young doctors.

Grey’s Anatomy returns Thursday, Sept. 27 at 9PM.
