Although many fans of Rihanna were distraught and feeling protective of the singer following her assault by Chris Brown in 2009, the singer revealed that she actually felt protective of him from the “circus” the situation became in a new interview as part of OWN’s Oprah’s Next Chapter.

Tearfully, she said, “I lost my best friend. Everything I knew switched in a night.”

What else did she have to say about that night and her relationship with Chris?

“I had to deal with that, and that's not easy for me to understand or interpret and it's not easy to interpret on camera, not with the world watching. So, it was hard for me to even pay attention to my mind and figuring things out because now it became a circus and I felt protective,” she told Oprah Winfrey emphatically.

“I felt like the only person they hate right now is him," she also said. "It was a weird, confusing space to be in, because as angry as I was, as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help.”

"And like who's gonna help him?” Rihanna continued, “Nobody's going to say he needs help. Everybody's going to say he's a monster without looking at the source. And I was more concerned about him."

In a previous promo for the special, Rihanna also mentioned that it was embarrassing and humiliating. “I was resentful. I held a grudge. I was dark.”

Rihanna and Brown broke up in 2009 following the assault which took place at a pre-Grammy Party. Brown pleaded guilty to the charge and received six months of community service in addition to five years of probation. The pair surprised fans when they collaborated  musically earlier this year.

The full Rihanna and Oprah interview will air as part of the Oprah’s Next Chapter Series on Sunday at 9 PM on OWN.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whovoeser believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (John 3:16-17) Jesus said: And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. (Matthew 10:22)Call toll free 1-888-Need-Him or go to NeedHim.org
