Celebuzz 101 Hot Bodies: Kellie Pickler Reveals How She Keeps in Shape, Best Way to Start a Day (EXCLUSIVE)
As a small-town girl growing up in rural North Carolina, Kellie Pickler kept in shape by by immersing herself in plenty of outdoor activities.
Aside from multiple album releases and a bevy of music awards, it seems as if not much has changed for the American Idol alum. In fact, the 26-year-old from Albemarle -- who ranked No. 75 on the Celebuzz 101 Hot Bodies countdown -- says she enjoys keeping in shape by doing everything from swimming outdoors to kayaking and hiking.
What else does Pickler do to keep healthy? And what is her philosophy on dieting?
While on tour for her current album, "100 Proof," the country singer-songwriter took some time to share her tips and tricks for keeping fit with Celebuzz. Read the full Q&A below:
Celebuzz: How do you keep in shape? Kellie Pickler: It's easier for me to stay fit in the summer than any other time of the year because I'm such an outdoors person. I love kayaking, hiking and doing yard work. I also love swimming outside. Swimming is so great for toning and so much better for your bones than running on the pavement or lifting weights.
Celebuzz: What do you do to workout when you can't get outside? KP: I have a pair of ankle weights -- which you can get at Walmart and places like that -- and they are great. You don't have to make time for it, because you can have them on while you're moving around. I will go to the grocery store with my ankle weights on if I want to in the wintertime when they are easier to cover up; you can put your pants right over them. I've worn them several times during the day while I'm running errands or cleaning. When I take them off at the end of the day, I think, "Gosh, I got a good little workout and I didn't really do much." I also have a treadmill in our TV room, and every once in a blue moon I'll put on a movie and walk. I climb at a steady pace -- not too high of an incline -- and I'll just walk until the movie stops. It feels good afterwards and I forget that I'm even working out.
Celebuzz: What's the best way to start your day? KP: If I start out eating healthy in the morning, it really sets the tone for the day. I love orange juice, but grapefruit is probably my favorite thing to eat in the morning; it doesn't weigh me down. I also love raw almonds.
Celebuzz: What are your main health or fitness priorities? KP: As women, I think we are all our biggest critics. When we look in the mirror, we're going to see the first thing that's wrong with us before we see the good thing. So, my main goal is to just not be so hard on myself. Of course, I also want to eat right. I splurge every now and then but the main idea is to eat healthy. I'm a vegetarian and that makes a big difference in the way that I feel, the way that I look -- my skin, everything!
Celebuzz: What's your general diet philosophy? KP: You should eat when you're hungry. You don't need to eat everything at one time; small portions throughout the day are better for you and don't make you feel so heavy and bloated. Also, water is really good for everything -- your skin, eyes and health -- it's detoxifying. It really gets all the junk out of your system. I drink a lot of water.
Celebuzz: Do you have any healthy recipes you can share with us? KP: I love vegetables. My husband and I will go to the grocery store and buy zucchini, squash, tomatoes, potatoes, onions and peppers for the grill. We put them in aluminum foil and put olive oil all over them with a little bit of sea salt and fresh ground pepper. I also love asparagus - whenever I'm home, I love to bake it. It takes just a minute and it's easy.
Celebuzz: What are some of your look leaner secrets? KP: Heels elongate you; we all look better in heels. I love jeans -- I am a big jean girl -- but you've got to find the right jeans that fit your body shape. You can also highlight certain areas like your collarbone and shoulders using a shimmer [product]. Self-tanners also help but sometimes they can be a little too dark for your skin. Try lightening it up by mixing it with a moisturizer. Also, stand up straight, don't hunch over.
Celebuzz: What's are your summer must-have products? KP: Everyone needs a good sunscreen whether you go out into the sun or not. Some people can go out in the sun for hours and not burn, but that direct contact is not good for your skin. I do love Tone Fruit Peel Body Wash. I have dry skin naturally so it's really great because it's hydrating, moisturizing and it smells great!
