‘Sparkle’ vs. ‘The Expendables 2′: Box Office Battle (POLL)

It’s a battle of the A-listers this week as Sparkle and The Expendables 2 go head-to-head at the box office.

Though the new releases couldn’t be further apart from one another in terms of genre — one revolves around a singing family set in 1960s Motown while another follows a present-day team of elite mercenaries — both are headlined by big-name stars.

Who’s gracing the silver screen this weekend?

Sparkle marks singing legend Whitney Houston’s final film before her untimely death in February.

Playing the mother of three singing sisters, Houston demonstrates her vocal and acting chops for the last time as she belts out “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” and “Celebrate,” a duet with costar and American Idol winner Jordin Sparks.

“She put my head in her hands and looked at me and said, ‘You’re everything that we wanted,’” Sparks recalled when telling Celebuzz about  her last encounter with Houston. “To have your idol tell you that — that was the type of woman she was. She was so nurturing and wanted to see everybody else succeed. She just wanted to see us do well.”

The Expendables 2, meanwhile, is looking to topple current box-office champ The Bourne Legacy.

Though the flick stars Hollywood veterans Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris, it also boasts newcomer Liam Hemsworth.

“He’s the new young guy, full of hope and aspiration,” Stallone, who wrote and directed the first installment, explains in the movie’s production notes. “He has a future ahead of him.”
