Rihanna Breaks down

Regardless of how the public feels, Rihanna has made one thing clear: she’s forgiven Chris Brown for the violent 2009 assault that she described as “embarrassing, humiliating, hurtful.”

“I think that he was the love of my life,” the 24-year-old told Oprah Winfrey during Sunday night’s Oprah’s Next Chapter. “He was my first love and I see that he loved me the same way.”

What else did she have to say about her relationship with Brown?

Despite their recent reunion in St. Tropez, Rihanna admitted that she and Brown are not seeing one another. The 23-year-old R&B singer is currently in a relationship. “It’s awkward because I still love him,” she said of seeing Brown again. “My stomach drops, and I have to maintain this poker face and not let it get to the outer part of me.”

The singer revealed that her father was occasionally violent toward her mother. It was only after she forgave her father that she could forgive Brown for his own assault toward her. However, it didn’t happen overnight. Rihanna admitted that the 2009 attack left her “angry” and “resentful.”

Perhaps more shockingly, Rihanna told Oprah, “We have maintained a very close friendship ever since the restraining order was dropped.”

In a previous promo for the episode, the singer revealed that she “felt protective” of Brown after the media backlash. “I felt like the only person they hate right now is him,” she said. “It was a weird, confusing space to be in, because as angry as I was, as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help.”

And like who’s gonna help him?” Rihanna continued, “Nobody’s going to say he needs help. Everybody’s going to say he’s a monster without looking at the source. And I was more concerned about him.”

Rihanna and Brown broke up in 2009 following the assault which took place at a pre-Grammy Party. Brown pleaded guilty to the charge and received six months of community service in addition to five years of probation. However, the pair surprised fans when they collaborated on two remixes in February.
