Jennifer Lopez Gives Advice to New 'American Idol,' 'X Factor' Judges Mariah Carey and Britney Spears (VIDEO)
Former American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez says that Britney Spears and Mariah Carey will succeed on The X Factor and Idol, respectively, so long as they are honest and stay true to themselves.
"It's just about being relaxed and being honest and being yourself," Lopez, 43, told Entertainment Tonight, referring to her two-year stint on Idol.
"If you try and think too much about what people might think or what you're saying too much, I think you get lost ..." she continued. "I always just kind of spoke right from the heart and how I would want someone to speak to me if I was in that position -- which I have been many times -- and it worked really well for me. I had a great time."
Lopez -- who confirmed she was leaving Idol in July, after beating around the bush for what felt like decades -- offered similar advice to Carey as the 42-year-old diva prepares to join Idol in January.
"So long as she's honest and speaks from the heart and just is herself, I think she'll be fine," she said. "I think that's what anybody who sits in that chair has to do."
Carey confirmed her Idol gig in July, saying in a statement:
As a singer, songwriter and producer, it’s going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with American Idol. I’m currently in the studio working on my new album and its first single, ‘Triumphant,’ which will be out early next month. I can’t wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show, which is a massive global phenomenon.Idol returns to FOX in January.
Spears, meanwhile, will join Simon Cowell, LA Reid and Demi Lovato at the judges' table when The X Factor returns for a second season this fall. Watch a preview clip of the brand-new season below.
