Kelly Ripa's No. 1 draft pick of Michael Strahan as her cohost on Live! is the right choice because "he’s got a broad opinion on a lot of things," according to his sister.

The ex-New York Giant has reportedly landed the much-coveted slot as Ripa’s cohost on Live! With Kelly, which has been vacant since Regis Philbin stepped down last November.

“He thinks he’s a comic,” Sandra Strahan told Celebuzz, in an exclusive interview.

“He’s got a broad opinion on a lot of things and they have a great rapport.”

Though there has been no official confirmation from Live! -- it had been announced that the new cohost will be introduced Sept. 4 on the show -- Strahan's sister confirmed the 6-foot-5, 275 pounds former footballer has been vacationing in the Bahamas.

“Michael told us he wanted to take a break from it all, because he’s been working so much," Sandra added.

Strahan, 40, was one of 59 guest hosts who Ripa tried out, including Saturday Night Live star Seth Meyers and singer Josh Groban.

Others who warmed the seat included Mark ConsuelosNeil Patrick Harris and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Strahan will keep his gig with FOX on FOX NFL Sunday.

Said his sister: “I was surprised he wanted it so bad, because it’s so confining. He’d have to be in New York five days a week. But, he’s excited about it and that’s what matters. He’ll just have to be bi-coastal.”

He has big shoes to fill. Philbin retired from the popular daytime talk show in November 2011 after 28 seasons.

In an interview with Celebuzz in April, 80-year-old Philbin doubted whether the Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, was even trying to find the right candidate to fill his legendary shoes.

“I don’t see anybody new on the show,” the man known as Reeg said.

“I wonder sometimes if they’re even looking for a new co-host. I see people like Seth Meyers — a terrific guy — but he’s got a show, Saturday Night Live and I don’t know if he could or would want to undertake this other show, as well.

“I don’t see anybody that they’re trying out — anybody new, I might say — that they’re trying out to get the job. Not yet, anyway.”

An ABC spokesperson told Celebuzz the network had no comment on co-host speculation.

"she is happily married" You have no idea if she's "happily married" or not. Everyone thought Kathie Lee Gifford was happily married until her husband got caught cheating with a flight attendant. "Don’t you think that the Kelly &… Show has MUCH better research tools to determine viewership" First of all, it's not called "The Kelly &... Show." The title of the show is "Live! with Kelly." Second, a show's research tools are not always accurate. If they were, few shows would ever fail.

And P.S. There is no room for prejudice of any kind on TV or anywhere else (so to those comments that either thinly or not so thinly veiled their bias your remarks should be ignored and you should change the channel because I'm sure you are not the demographic they are going for). Also, those that see sex, whenever affection or even "touching" is shown, should decide if they are the ones with a problem...so you need counseling or are you so super-religious that neither is permitted at any time...if that is the case, change the channel, again, perhaps you don't fall within the demographic, but I can tell the the aim is never to offend, just to entertain, with the eye toward reaching the widest possible audience (those I've described are or should be the fringe)

    1. My husband I completely disagree. Kelly and Michael have a terrific repore (and some of you should get your mind out of the gutter or other even worse places). 2. Kelly has a natural inclination to make jokes and overcompliment her co-hosts (male and female) on looks, abilities, talents, etc. Some of it may come off as "sexual"... she is happily married and is a very family oriented person! 3. Michael, is also appealing to more than just your average jock/sports consumer. Women like him too. He is good looking, intelligent, and a great conversationalist. This is not a home decorating show, or a sewing show, etc. The humor and the great synergy between Michael and Kelly is just right for this show. 4. I wonder why we are so protective of certain classes of people (race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.), but because he was a former NFL player, everyone feels it's just fine to discount him...as if he isn't an intelligent man, good looking, with broadcast experience, etc. 5. Don't you think that the Kelly &... Show has MUCH better research tools to determine viewership during his many appearances, and in addition, don't you thing THEY know what their own demographics are and who best fills that need as well as many others???? I sincerely wonder why the few out there think they know so much because they have such narrow views or simply prefer someone else (they start citing big words like demographics....that they don't have a clue about) They are one member of an "AUDIENCE".... stop acting like a jilted gf/bf. 6. And for the last poster, it's not Kelly who needs to get over herself, everyone else who seems to meet or work with her needs to get over her...they are the ones who seem to continuously sing her praises for being so much fun to work with, so positive, so self depreciating. ****2 VOTES FOR MICHAEL & KELLY*****

The minute I saw this decision I expected comments like these. Clearly, Kelly's hanging on him and getting touchy feely will make certain segments of our society too uncomfortable. The comment about not being "visually acceptable" is also an honest and expected. The question is will the overall rating be affected. We will see. This reminds me of the Rachel Welsh/Jim Brown controversy of the 1960's. I hope America can get past this.

michael strahan is a lousy choice..his demographic are men who watch football..The show's demograghic is women who are home at 9am..he is not physically appealing to that female demograghic...he is also not a good physical match on screen sitting next to kelly Ripa...you needed a person who is easy to visually accept in the morning ...BAD CHOICE
