Former 'Today' Host Meredith Vieira Says Ryan Seacrest 'Should Be More Scared' of Matt Lauer (VIDEO)
Now that Ryan Seacrest has officially joined the Today show, should Matt Lauer still be worried that the American Idol host is after his job?
Heck no, says Lauer's former right-hand woman, Meredith Vieira.
"I think Ryan is very respectful of Mr. Lauer," Vieira told Celebuzz this week while promoting the eleventh season of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire.
"I think Ryan should be more scared of Lauer!" she joked. "He's a crafty little devil."
"I call Matt the Meercat," she continued to quip. "Not just because he looks like one. [Laughs] No, he's not."
All kidding aside, Vieira -- who worked closely with Seacrest at the 2012 Olympics in London -- had only kind things to say about Seacrest's run thus far.
"Ryan is great," she said. "Matt will have that job as long as Matt wants it, and then once that's over, who knows?"
"I just know Ryan was fantastic at the Olympics," she added. "Everybody embraced him, and he was incredibly embracing to everybody else. He's a very hard-working guy -- a really nice guy and very talented."
In April, Seacrest signed a deal with NBCUniversal that would allow him to contribute to the TODAY show, Olympics coverage, election coverage and other major events.
As the deal was finalized, many speculated that Seacrest was plotting to take Lauer's job as co-anchor of NBC's top-rated news program.
The rumors were quickly squashed in a funny, albeit testy, interview between Seacrest and Lauer, on April 4. Check it out, below.
Vieira joined TODAY in 2006 after Katie Couric left to become the host of CBS Evening News.
She left in 2011, for personal reasons.
