Taylor Swift Scores First No. 1 Single With ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’
After reaching No. 2 with her hits “You Belong With Me” and “Today Was a Fairytale,” Taylor Swift finally scored her first No. 1 single on Billboard’s Hot 100 with her breakup anthem “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” The track rocketed from No. 72 to the top of the charts after a record-breaking week.
What record did T. Swift break?
The pop-country crooner’s hit sold 623,000 downloads in its first week, reports Billboard, marking the highest one-week digital sales by a female artist and second only to Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” which sold 636,000 in its first week in 2009.
Swift’s rise to the top shouldn’t come as a surprise. After only 24 hours in radio rotation, Swift’s new single had more than 30 million plays, reports Billboard. More impressively, the track is already among the week’s 40 most-played songs across all formats.
Not only is her single No. 1, but things between Swift and her beau Conor Kennedy, 18, the grandson of the Robert F. Kennedy, are also heating up. She recently purchased a 4,400-square-foot oceanfront mansion in Hyannis Port, Mass., next door to the Kennedy family’s famed vacation compound.
Swift and Conor have been spotted spending some quality time together at the Kennedy’s vacation since July 4. The singer even reportedly took Conor to Nashville to introduce him to her parents, Scott and Andrea, in early August.
However, the young couple’s whirlwind romance is reportedly not going over well with the entire Kennedy family . Victoria Gifford Kennedy, the wife of the late Michael Kennedy, told the Boston Globe the 22-year-old country star “looked right past her” when she asked Swift to leave her daughter’s wedding on Saturday.
“[Conor and Taylor] texted me an hour before the wedding and asked if they could come,” Victoria said. “I responded with a very clear, ‘Please do not come.’ They came anyway.”
Victoria apparently feared the singer’s presence would detract from her daughter’s big day. And it partially did. Swift reportedly caused quite a fan frenzy at the Fairmont Copley Plaza hotel when she came on the arm of her Kennedy beau.
Swift’s spokeswoman claimed, “Taylor was invited to the wedding;” Victoria said Conor was invited to the wedding but never RSVP’d.
