'The Secret Life of the American Teenager' Summer Finale Recap: Who Died?
The theme of the episode was decisions — and not just decisions, but BIG decisions.
Note: Spoilers ahead if you haven't watched Monday's episode, "Half Over."
Ricky (Daren Kagasoff), who used to be a serial polygamist, wants to marry Amy (Shailene Woodley), even though everyone already thinks they’re married (more on that strange plot later). Anyhow, he wants to do it for real this time, but he thinks that Amy wants to be single, and he tells her that he thinks she wants to move to New York to attend a school called Hudson University (note: we’ve never heard of it).
Ricky and Amy fight over a bunch of stuff—like why their son John (Joseph Levinson) has Amy’s last name instead of Ricky’s (see: fake wedding ceremony), and whether they should allow John — who’s three — to wear a costume to pre-school. They keep fighting over parenting stuff, and then Ricky reminds Amy (again) that it is her "dream" to go to Hudson University (seriously, we’re googling this school, asap!). Why does she want to go there so bad?
Later, Ben (Ken Baumann) also reminds Amy that she got into “Hudson University” and he tells her there’s a reason she didn’t marry Ricky — he thinks she’s still not over him. But Amy tells Ben it would be best if they ended all communication -- texting, calling, etc, because they can’t manage to be friends… AND, guess what? Ben got into Hudson University, too! Congrats, Ben!
Still, his acceptance into this school we’ve never heard of isn’t enough to win Amy back. In fact, she tells Ben that even if she wasn’t with Ricky, she still wouldn’t get back together with him (that’s gotta hurt!)
Meanwhile, across town, everyone is worried about Jack Pappas (Greg Finley) who is unconscious after getting beaten down by a pimp. At the hospital, Grace (Megan Park) keeps asking: “He’s not gonna die, is he?” But while everyone else is busy worrying, Tom is trying to find the pimp who put Jack in critical condition, so he calls Betty (Jennifer Coolidge). He figures that since she used to be a prostitute, she probably knows all of the pimps in the world -- including the pimp who put Jack in the coma and guess what? She does! Still as much as everyone talked and talked about Jack and worried about him and tried to find his attacker, we never actually see Jack in the episode, which is kind of disappointing. We like Jack. And we too are worried about him.
And we just have to point this out: When Amy tells Ben that she is planning to marry Ricky, Ben delivers one of the best lines of the night: “Just know that I’ll be at the back of the Church and that if you decide to run, I’ll be waiting for you, because you didn’t have a first wedding.” (Someone page Dustin Hoffman, we smell a Graduate remake!)
Buzz Moments
OMG!: OK, so Tom (Luke Zimmerman), and his girlfriend Tammy (Michelle Marks ) are totes having sex, and we love it!
Thank you, TV gods: For giving us that scene between Adrian (Francia Raisa) and Omar where he draws an engagement ring around her finger using a marker. That was kind of cute… But are they really engaged? It was kind of confusing.
Awk-ward: Tom and Tammy sneaking out to have sex wins top prize!
Hotness: Daren Kagasoff looked good in the episode. As usual...
Can. Not. Wait.: The episode ended with a cliffhanger that leaves us wondering if Jack's alive or dead. Do we seriously have to wait months to find out the answer to that question? We’ll never let go, Jack! We’ll never let go!
Celebuzz Meter (1-10): 4. This episode presented us with way too many questions and not enough answers. It also didn’t feature any of the things we love about Secret Life: A tall, lanky character dancing like a dufus in his bedroom and talking about oral sex; a character saying something incredibly weird, like, “I had incredible sex”; or Francia Raisa walking around half-naked for no reason whatsoever.
What did you think of tonight's summer finale? Are you rooting for Ben and Amy or Amy and Ricky? Do you think Jack will make it? And more importantly, have you ever heard of Hudson University? Leave us a comment!

Wow, Charlotte. Couldn't have said it better myself. I love where you said: "I just. Can't. Stand. Ricky." I feel the same way. Ricky annoys the ---- out of me!
I was pretty depressed as well! Still am depressed, actually...well, no good that'll do! Considering I just watched the episode all these months later, I guess you could say I'm a bit behind everyone else.
To be honest, no matter what you all say, I love Ben and Amy together. Ricky annoys the heck out of me! I just. Can't. Stand. Ricky. I don't know how else to say it! Sure, Ben gets on my nerves sometimes, but not even close to as much as Ricky!
this show is amazing i watch it over and over again.i wish i could meet them in real life!
Hoping for Ricky and Amy to continue to be together. Perhaps face hardships almost every couple goes through and make it through in the end like the couples who really are meant for each other. Looking forward to the next season.
Seriously.... after watching this episode I was so emotionally wrecked. I couldn't stop thinking about death and what if I lost my boyfriend of 5 years who is also a football player. I woke up depressed and had to go to work depressed, but somehow I still absolutely love this show. I can't wait for the next season and thanks to everyone for saying Jack is going to live because I have been all upset. Congrats to the writers who continue to pull me into this show!!!
how can you down a show hat your obviously watching week after wee. if you hate it so much tune the fck out. i love this show been watching it since season one and cant wait until it returns
Maybe he comes back as a spirit for Grace, to help her heal. But I really hope he doesn't die its just too sad but it is more real life for him to die.
Why do you watch a show that is so awful and then look up something online about it and then write how awful it is? that's pretty stupid if you ask me. If you don't like it don't watch it! simple as that. There are millions of other shows to watch and Im sure there are even shows that you really enjoy that others might think need to be canceled.
I hope he doesn't die.... He needs to live!
I agree!!!
LOL!
What web site did you fine the answer on?
This show isnt great but i always find myself watching it week after week, and "I am heart broken at the thought of Jack dieing, he and the gorgeous ricky are my favourite characters, but the scene at the hospital when jacks parents come out asking to pray, they way they were and how everyone reacted makes me think he died :'( As for amy and ben, NO WAY, ben is so annoying, hes what 18? 19? and he loves every girl hes in a relationship with even if it was only a short relationship. Ricky and Amy all the way. And finally a season finale with a cliff hanger on this show! I was starting to think the producers\writers didnt kno what a cliff hanger was, but i still wish i kno what happens with Jack!!
well it looks to me that you two have to like the show seeing how you are on the site for the show trying to see whats going on if you didn't like it you wouldn't be here in the first place
I love how it was referred to as "Hudson University in New York" every single time it was mentioned
Jack is back next season making me not even care about this show anymore who is the actress that plays Clementine she is wow
No one died its the season finale....its like what was Jack doing protecting a prostitute. More than likely back next season.
I was disappointed. So many unnecessary things happened: Ann and her new gay girlfriend, Kathy and her boyfriend and the couple who will be adopting her baby; Ben trying to get Amy to admit she still cares when he's just making a fool of himself b/c their relationship ended two years ago and now he very likely will cause her to hate him with his constant stalking and pompous assertion that she still cares; Leo and Camilla talking to the reformed prostitute and offering her a home with them (Benny Boy will just love that). The only "good" part -- and I use that term lightly since this show stinks -- was the last few minutes in the hospital waiting room. So we had to wait 55 minutes to see that ... and nothing was even revealed!!!!
I'm glad for this "spoiler." Jack was a good guy who never stopped being in love with the fickle on-again/off-again-with- her-Christianity Grace. Has anyone noticed that the new boy in town (the freshman who is in love with the pregnant girl) has all of a sudden become trustworthy and respectful and way more common sense than Ben who is three years his senior?!!!
A person would have to be desperate to settle for Ben. He can't even make up his mind ... dating Dillon (who was a pain, admittedly) but still wanting Amy. He's making such a fool of himself. Soon Amy will wind up actually hating him. He needs to be punched out again. My favorite scene this season was when Camille flattened him. I watched it over and over. I've truly grown to hate Ben!
I agree. Why couldn't they have tied up the loose ends tonight and said goodbye? The only ones with any brains in the show are Ricky, Leo and Margaret. Ben is disgusting. He goes around sneering all the time; I think he's going back to childhood, really regressing. Leo must be so ashamed of him. Good for Amy for telling him she would NEVER go back with him. He's an ass!
I couldn't agree more. It's laughable.
Jack didnt die i found website that said he will be back :-)
oh please never ever Amy and Ben, the poor Ben is pathetic and quite a creepy stalker..even if Amy whines she still deserves better and the chemistry is between Amy and Ricky therefore it is Amy and Ricky or NOTHING !
What did you guys think of the episode?
ok Hudson University does not exist. it is allowed only for TV to us for shows liKe L&O, Without a Trace, Cosby show, etc. So it is a a made up college
I think Jack died, Greg Finley(the actor) did not renew his contract and is also aging out of the show. I have not heard of "hudson university". obviously they make it up for a show cuz it is a fictional tv show(one of the very last ones since now everything is a reality tv show)
I hope Jack lives, but I think he's a goner :(. So sad, he's always been my favorite guy on the show. I would love for Amy and Ben to get back together. Ricky is hot, but I honestly can't stand him. Ricky can go off and be with that annoying Clemetine girl. And what was with the AA meeting? I feel like too much was packed into the episode for anything to get as much attention as it should have.
Please cancel this dumb show. Really dumb show.
Let them all die. The Secret Life of the American Teenager is the worst show on television. Insufferable characters, horrible acting and terrible dialogue.
