'The New Normal' Families of Hollywood (GALLERY)

If you watched hours of the Summer Olympics -- and didn't hit the remote during the ads -- you’ve probably heard of NBC's The New Normal, one of the most talked about shows of the fall TV season.

Created by Ryan Murphy, the mind behind Glee and American Horror Story, The New Normal is the story of a gay couple who wants to start a family and enlists the help of a single mom to act as their surrogate. Add a bigoted grandmother and a sassy personal assistant to the mix and this could be one of the great family ensemble comedies to come around in years.

In Hollywood, the traditional “nuclear” family is often replaced by well, whatever works. As a result, stars both married and unmarried, straight or gay, have been raising happy families for decades.
