When NBC’s The Voice premieres Monday night, the new season of the show will feature a change in format incorporating “The Steal” during the battle rounds. This year, when a coach sends someone home, another one has the option to pick the singer up for their team.

On Wednesday, Adam Levine joked with Jay Leno about the change, “After extensive research we found people like the button. When the button goes away people are sad.”

With tensions set to run high due to this new format, what did the Maroon 5 front man have to say about his previously tumultuous relationship with fellow coach Christina Aguilera?

“Christina and I had our rough start and everyone’s talking about that but we’re super tight close friends now.”

Levine, 33, says he thinks the close-knit friendships on The Voice differentiate the show from other singing competitions like The X Factor and Idol. He considers both Blake Shelton and Cee-Lo to be wonderful friends.

In a clip from the premiere, the singer even does a spot on impersonation of his Shelton, his reported BFF. Just don’t call their relationship a bromance. “I am a fan of the bromance. However, that name, that title… it’s silly.”

Asked how the impression came about, Levine says, “It just happens.” Going right into the country star’s southern drawl, he continues, “Very naturally. He just says what he’s going to say. I think you should be on my team. Just gosh dang it, you’re just so cool. You’re just so cool. “

Announced on Wednesday, The Voice’s premiere has expanded to three nights of blind auditions engaging the show in a head-to-head battle with the premiere of FOX’s  The X Factor next Wednesday night.

The Voice premieres on Monday night at 8 PM on NBC.
