MTV Video Music Awards 2012: Best and Worst Fashion (GALLERY)
One of the most exciting parts of the MTV Video Music Awards is always the red carpet, where you can catch Hollywood's most eclectic style parade there is.
Fashion week may be taking place in New York City right now, but across the coast, Hollywood's hottest performers were setting their own trends on the left coast at the VMAs
While outrageous fashion statements are pretty much expected at the annual event, which has been marked by everything from Lil' Kim's pasty disaster to Lady Gaga's wacky meat dress, this year, we were shocked for a whole different reason.
Instead of a laundry list of worst and wackiest get-ups, we were pleasantly surprised by all the fashion winners we saw tonight.
Rather than exposed nipples and thongs, music's A-listers seemed to have grown up, proving how chic it can be to cover up.
Still, it wouldn't be the VMAs without some truly bold -- and bad -- looks. While most celebs stayed away from DIY dresses made of garbage bags or meat, there were some notable fashion faux-pas committed as well.

We've compiled our favorite style winners and misses from tonight's VMA red carpet. Whether you agree with our style assessment or not, one thing is certain: This year's VMA stars were all about taking fashion risks.
