‘Last Resort’ Preview: Prepare for an Epic and Awesome Ride (VIDEO)
Last Resort focuses on the crew of the U.S.S. Colorado, led by Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) and XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman). After their sub questions sketchy orders to annihilate Pakistan and essentially start a nuclear war, they are attacked by the US and forced to flee to a nearby island.
Serving the country with “honor in defiance” as the series’ tagline suggests, the Captain and his crew decide to change the game with a killer speech from Chaplin, threatening both the US and other countries from attacking them. To make it worse, they’ll face threats from within this island as well.
Like we said, this show is intense.
So why should you watch Last Resort?
Who’s who: In addition to Braugher and Speedman, the cast also features Daisy Betts (Sea Patrol) as Lt. Grace Shepard, one of the only women officers on the submarine. Her dad and bigwig Navy guy, Admiral Arthur Shepard is portrayed by Bruce Davison. Autumn Reeser (The OC, Entourage) plays Kylie Sinclar, the woman who developed a nuke prototype and got it placed on the Colorado. Dichen Lachman (Dollhouse) and Robert Patrick (The Terminator) also star.
Buzz: What’s so awesome about Last Resort? Well, first of all, one of the masterminds behind the project is Ryan. Having created The Shield and worked on The Unit and the critically acclaimed but short-lived Terriers, fans know he knows he can craft an excellent story. Second of all, and we know this sounds shallow, but it puts Speedman back on TV for the first time since Felicity! Welcome back Ben, we’ve missed you!
Workin’ it: Most of this pilot worked and worked very well. It felt like we were watching a movie. The second it ended, we wanted more. Ryan’s writing was spectacular and though occasionally filled with naval jargon was easy to understand. The direction, the acting, everything was above average for us. We can’t wait to learn more about the characters, their motivations and how this situation is really all going to play out.
Not so much: It’s hard to think of what was sub par in this pilot but with such an amazing and ambitious pilot, we’re a little worried (seriously, just a little) that the show won’t be able to sustain its awesomeness.
Celebuzz meter (1-10): 9. One of our two favorite pilots of the new fall season, we are really hoping this show can keep up its intensity and movie-like quality to succeed.
Last Resort premieres Thursday, Sept. 27 at 8 PM on ABC but if you can’t wait just click the link above and you can watch the full pilot episode, available from Yahoo! TV.
