'Last Resort' Premiere: Who's Who on ABC's Intense New Show (GALLERY)
ABC’s Last Resort isn’t just about the action-packed sequences; it’s about the characters.
When the men and woman of the USS Colorado receive orders to nuke another country through improper channels, Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) and XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) are forced to make a decision to go against what they’ve always done as naval officers and refuse the order.
“I think what’s interesting about these two characters is the mass majority of the men put in this position, they would just follow orders,” Speedman told reporters recently. “These are two guys that don’t.”
With their refusal, the Colorado is attacked by it’s own government and a nuclear war begins between Pakistan and the United States.
As Braugher puts it, “We have the world’s largest handgun held to the head of the world but we have to do it the right way. This kind of optimism and discipline is necessary really to survive as sailors.”
While the Captain and the XO are two obviously integral parts of this series, there are a number of characters who live in the world of Last Resort. So who are they?
In addition to Chaplin and Kendal, USS Colorado Lieutenant Grace Shepard (Daisy Betts) will make her mark both on the sub and the island. When asked to describe her character she says, “I play a female officer in the navy. She’s really gutsy. Everything that she’s ever believed in is questioned.”
One of the other major female leads on this action drama, Kylie Sinclair, is played by OC and Entourage alum Autumn Reeser.
The unabashedly ambitious weapons lobbyist she plays gets her world shaken when the Colorado is attacked as the nuclear prototype she has built is on the sub. “It’s basically her baby, she has years of her life invested in this and now it’s about getting it back, seeing if it works and she’s sort of thrust into this drama with them unbeknowest to her,” Reeser said.
Given that the show’s pilot was almost like a movie, many are wondering if showrunners Shawn Ryan and Karl Gajdusek can keep up what they’ve started. However, the stars of the show aren't worried.
“It’s really about the characters and what’s so great about it is that every situation is life and death. The country is at the brink of nuclear war in the story,” Reeser told us.
“It’s life and death for the characters. It’s life and death for everybody on the planet," she continued. "The stakes are so high so you get to see these conflicted real grey human beings thrust into these situations that are so high stakes it’s incredible. You watch them fail and you watch them succeed and everybody sort of intermingles.”
