‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Creator Shonda Rhimes Explains Season Premiere’s Shocking Death
On her personal WhoSay blog, she wrote a detailed entry entitled “WHY THE F#%K DOES SHONDA KILL CHARACTERS?!” and answers other burning questions.” Thanking her fans for sticking through the stories on not only Grey’s, but also her other shows Private Practice and Scandal, she detailed why she and the other show writers may have killed some of your fave people on her shows.
Note: Spoiler’s ahead if you have not watched the Season 9 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, “Going, Going, Gone.”
On Thursday night’s episode, Grey’s fans were devastated by the death of Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), who was taken off life support per his own wishes after the insane plane crash of Season 8. While fans knew the actor would be leaving this season, many weren’t prepared for his death.
Of his death, Rhimes writes, “For me, this one is the most tragic. I’m VERY attached to Mark Sloan. He’s part of the fabric of the show. Before he ever even appeared on the show, the characters discussed him. He is one of the originals.”
She mentions that any option that involved Mark leaving and not dying would have had him having to walk away from his daughter and grieve for Lexie (Chyler Leigh).
“I didn’t want Mark to die but, as the writers rightfully argued back, Mark couldn’t abandon Sofia and he certainly couldn’t abandon Callie [Sara Ramirez] once Arizona’s [Jessica Capshaw] leg was amputated,” she continued.
Rhimes also said she would have loved for him to run away with Addison (Kate Walsh), but doing this would have invalidated everything between him and the love of his life, Lexie.
“Mark would never [willingly] abandon Sofia and he would never willingly abandon Callie. So Mark dies. And he and Lexie get to be together in a way,” she writes. “Their love remains true.”
Also commenting on Lexie’s death, she says that her death still haunts her.
“I adored that character and I couldn’t imagine the show without her. It was important to me that her exit would have maximum impact. The plane was going to crash no matter what,” she explains.
Once she knew that Leigh would be leaving the show, she thought the best way for her character Lexie to go would be in the woods, with Mark by her side, knowing that he loved her.
After last night’s need for lots of tissues, she assured Grey’s Fans that she is, “full of happy stories for our characters this season!”
Rhimes promises to write more about Arizona’s (Jessica Capshaw) fate, declines to talk about Scandal’s story lines and also commented on Pete’s (Tim Daly) death on Private Practice. To read Rhimes’ entire blogpost, click here.
Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal air on Thursday at 9 and 10 PM respectively. Private Practice airs on Tuesday at 10 PM — all on ABC.
