Justin Bieber may be an international superstar, but the 18-year-old admits he wouldn’t be anywhere if it weren’t for his mother.

In her tell-all memoir Nowhere But Up: The Story of Justin Bieber’s MomPattie Mallette, 36, reveals her her difficult upbringing — surrounded by alcoholism, sexual abuse, and violence.

“My mom went through a lot growing up, and I feel like it’s going to help a lot of young girls who went through a similar story,” Bieber told Entertainment Tonight, before admitting that he got emotional while reading the book.

“She didn’t tell me any of it until I was old enough. I was like ‘Wow, I can’t believe you stayed so strong through me being young. It’s great.'”

Bieber may be one of the most famous teenagers on the planet, but that doesn’t mean the “As Long as You Love Me” singer has forgotten where he came from. In fact, Bieber hopes to inspire his millions of fans to never give up on their dreams.

“I just want to make a good impact on the world,” he said. “Whether to believe, or never give up on your dreams, because I never thought I could be here.”

He continued: “You guys probably don’t think you can get to where you could get but you can, because I’m here performing in this huge arena, with all this huge production. I never thought that I would be able to do any of this; this is beyond my wildest dreams.”
