Buzz at the Box Office: ‘Taken 2’ Finds and Kills Audience, ‘Frankenweenie’ Fizzles
No matter how mixed critics were about the follow-up to the 2009 left-field blockbuster Taken, audiences responded unanimously: They want to see Liam Neeson mess people up in foreign countries.
Taken 2 scored only a 19 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but the film took in a weekend haul of $49.5 million, recouping its $45 million budget in just three days.
Meanwhile, the animated adventure Hotel Transylvania dropped to the No. 2 spot with receipts totaling just over $27 million for the weekend, bringing its total theatrical gross – of just two weeks – to more than $76.7 million.
What spot did ‘Frankenweenie’ find in the box office Top Ten?
The weekend’s other big new release, Frankenweenie, unfortunately flopped in fifth place, bringing in just $11.4 million. One can only guess the audience for black and white kids' movies is not as big as director Tim Burton had hoped.
And Looper keeps itself in the game with another $12 million in ticket sales, bringing its grosses to just over $40 million so far.
