Lady Gaga Visits WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange in London (PHOTOS & VIDEO)
Lady Gaga paid a visit to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at the Ecuador Embassy in London, where he has been holed up for months as he avoids extradition to Sweden. According to multiple reports, the pop superstar arrived — allegedly for dinner — around 7 p.m. and didn't bid Assange adieu until well past midnight.
After being granted political asylum in Ecuador, the embattled website founder has faced deportation to Sweden over allegations of rape and sexual assault made by two women. As his legal team tackles the case, Assange has been hiding out at the embassy since June 19.
But it seems the controversial activist hasn't been entirely solitary inside the walls of the embassy.
On Sunday, British-born rapper M.I.A. tweeted at Lady Gaga, urging Mother Monster to follow her footsteps: “If ur at harrods today, come visit Assange at the Ecuador embassy across the st. im there. Ill bring TEA and CAKE (sic)."
The "Edge of Glory" singer was in London to launch her new perfume, Fame, at Harrods department store in Knightsbridge, close to the Ecuadorian embassy. No word on whether M.I.A. in fact joined the pair on Monday, but an embassy spokeswoman confirm Gaga's visit to The Telegraph. "People can visit [Assange]," she explained, "but usually he has his own team set up the appointments."LitteMonsters.com.
Though they may be his latest visitors, M.I.A. and Gaga are not Assange's only celebrity supporters. Directors Oliver Store and Michael Moore have openly expressed concern that a Swedish extradition could spiral into Assange being banished to the United States, where he could face further criminal charges.
