Jessica Alba, Miranda Kerr and More Stars Show Their Side-Stripes in Tuxedo Pants: Trendspotting (GALLERY)

If tuxedo pants and track pants were to have a baby, this season’s side-striped pants would be it — and the sporty-chic style has Miranda Kerr, Olivia Palermo and Alicia Keys showing their stripes.

After doing a complete 180, summer’s horizontal stripes have migrated south, where they have been gracing the sides of everything from skinny jeans to tailored trousers and breezy ankle styles.

The chic melding of workout wear and formal wear makes this season’s take on tuxedo trousers far more versatile than you might think…

The sporty yet refined vertical stripe adds instant style to any pair of pants, but it’s far easier to pull off than the season’s other printed pants trend, earning the side-stripe a diverse following, with everyone from preppy Palermo and edgy Alba to cool Keys sporting side-stripes.

To take this sporty style from the track to the office or out on the town, keep the rest of your look polished and streamlined. In other words, skip the sneakers, tees and baggy tops.

Fit and fabric are key. With denim styles, do as Palermo does with her oxblood striped skinnies and mustard sweater, and you’ll be golden: Opt for fitted denim in rich hues to counter a boxier top, and look for polished extras to finish of the look like the reality star’s heels and clutch.

If you prefer trouser styles like Kerr’s khaki version, avoid veering into black-tie territory by opting for tailored ankle-length styles. A crisp white blouse and a great pair of heels — a la Keys and Kerr — elevate the borrowed-from-the-boys bottoms.
