'Last Resort' Star Robert Patrick: 'I'm Not the Villain of This Show'
On ABC’s new drama Last Resort, Robert Patrick is often as relentless and formidable as his most infamous character, the T-1000 cyborg in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. As Master Chief Joseph Prosser on the military/political thriller, the actor likens himself to an "old lion" who's spoiling for a fight. But even though he seems to be set up as the antagonist to submarine Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher), he insists, "I’m not the villain of this show.”
That's what Patrick told reporters during a recent press call as he explained why, as the Chief of the Boat (COB), he is the leading force amongst the crew against Captain Chaplin’s decision in the premiere episode to disobey orders of dubious origin to start a nuclear war.
“I'm going to tell you where I'm at,” he explained. “Right now I'm totally dedicated with the men and women that are on that boat and taking care of that boat. And that's where I'm at -- I'm going to protect the men and women of the armed forces - or of that particular boat. That's who I'm looking out for.”
What else did he say about his character’s role this season?
With Chaplin’s fateful decision to go rogue, the COB will be keeping a watchful eye on him, as well as the XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) and Lieutenant Grace Shepard (Daisy Betts).
Patrick told reporters the most important thing to know about the COB is his allegiance is to his country. It’s not that he’s monitoring Chaplin and those officers loyal to him them just to be antagonistic, but rather, that his loyalty is to America.
Speaking of his character’s mindset, he said, “The whole system is based on: you take orders from up above and you do what you're told. That's the oath you take. And if one of these guys goes, you know, goes - all the sudden makes up his own mind says, ‘You know what I'm not going - my allegiance is not there anymore, my allegiance is to me and what I feel is right.’... That's what's blowing Prosser's mind.”
Patrick, 53, also teased reporters about the tension building between Prosser and the XO. “And being an old lion I'm sure that somebody's going to want to challenge me,” he said. “I think Prosser's getting prepared for that.”

Last Resort airs Thursdays at 8 PM on ABC.
