Anne Hathaway, Miley Cyrus, Kourtney Kardashian's Denim Flashback: 11 Celebrities in 'Mom Jeans' (PHOTOS)
Who knew moms would become fashion's newest muses?
Originally used to refer to the high-waisted tapered denim popular in the '80s and early '90s, "mom jeans" became a pop culture phenomenon when Saturday Night Live mocked the cut in a 2003 skit, and the fashionably-challenged mothers who continued to rock the cut long after they had been replaced by lower-waisted, flared styles.
So why is this former fashion faux pas making a comeback?
Depending on who you ask, "mom jeans" aren't necessarily coming back into style. But as more trends from the '80s and '90s make a comeback (like poufy shoulders and Doc Martens), designers have refashioned the eras' denim trends too.
Nowadays, designers have revamped the mom jeans to be more flattering for women of all sizes, pairing them with a flared or skinny leg to balance the waist-defining, belly-button grazing cut, while high-waisted denim cut-offs gives off a more casual-cool vibe.Kourtney Kardashian. However, if you're short-waisted and curvy, like Jessica Simpson, the look can quickly become a fashion don't.
But some daring trendsetters like Hathaway have gone completely retro in full-on "mom jeans" that look like the ones worn by Angela in My So Called Life and Kelly and Brenda in 90210 -- and their moms.
What do you think about Anne and Miley's jeans? Can "mom jeans" ever look chic?
