The Dark Knight Rises’ cinematographer, Wally Pfister, will soon make his directorial debut. And he just might cast Batman.

Christian Bale is rumored for a role in Pfister’s sci-fi thriller Transcendence, The Los Angeles Times reported Friday. The Oscar winner is “[in the director’s] sights,” said The Times.

If cast, Bale may join Johnny Depp in the top-secret production, which centers on a man who creates a computer that develops a malevolent awareness. Bale and Depp previously co-starred in director Michael Mann’s gangster picture, Public Enemies.

Since Memento, Pfister has shot every one of director Christopher Nolan’s films. The cinematographer won the Academy Award for 2010’s Inception.

Bale’s involvement with the production is far from a lock, but given his longstanding working relationship with Pfister, it’s likely The Dark Knight star could join the film. Transcendence will shoot in Los Angeles early next year.
