On Tuesday, President Barack Obama declared the New York and New Jersey region a major disaster area, NBC News reported.

He promised that the federal government would do all it could to help local authorities cope with damage. The president was scheduled to visit damaged areas in New Jersey on Wednesday, the White House said.
