‘Suburgatory’s’ Parker Young Talks Ryan’s Shirtless Winter, Adoption and Romancing Tessa (Q&A)
All signs point to a Ryan Shay-filled sophomore season of ABC’s Suburgatory. And we’re sure no one’s complaining – certainly not the handsome actor who plays the cool (yet dimwitted) character.
“There definitely is a lot of Ryan this season,” Parker Young, who plays Ryan, tells Celebuzz. “Much more so than last season, which is pretty exciting.”
Season 2 finds the Shay family dealing with the secret of Ryan’s adoption. And while he’s clueless about being adopted, the teen jock deals with his own growing romantic feelings for neighbor Tessa (Jane Levy).
We spoke to the 24-year-old actor about Ryan’s Season 2 developments, including the adoption, romancing Tessa and, of course, whether the winter will curtail his famous shirtless moments.
Celebuzz: Season 2 started after the summer. What has Ryan been up to during the break?
Parker Young: He knows nothing of his adoption, so life goes on as usual for Ryan. There’ll be a lot of sports training, a lot of hitting the gym and preparing during the off season, a lot of trying to work on himself to just be a better, more suitable match for Tessa, you know? This girl is controlling his life in a way in that she clogs his mind and thoughts, so I think a lot of time is spent just trying to pursue Tessa and get ready for the school year, enjoying the summer.
CB: Series creator Emily Kapnek has said she really wants to explore Ryan and Tessa’s romantic relationship. What does that mean for Ryan this season?
PY:For people who like that relationship, it is great news. And I happen to be one of those people that like that relationship. I think he really loves this girl for a number of reasons, so there’s been a lot of self-reflection and trying to — not court, but just figure out where he may be lacking or what may be blocking them from having a legitimate relationship. And he’s a good guy and I think that with time, Tessa may realize it’s kind of what she may need in her life.”
CB: There’s some kind of flashback coming up that explains Ryan’s adoption. What can you tell us about that?
PY: I know a little bit. But, yeah, it’s pretty funny. Ryan’s parents wanted a kid and I think there were issues with fertility. They didn’t think they were able to get pregnant, but they obviously were able to — they had Lisa. I think there was some drama with the adoption, but none of that so far in the season. There’s nothing dramatic that’s happened with his birth parents or anything thus far in the season. But, it would be interesting if something were to come around later in the season with his biological parents. I would love to search for them even. He’s just kind of finding out and processing it, so he hasn’t really taken action. I haven’t done much, so I’m excited to see how the writers approach him moving on and moving forward with the knowledge that he’s adopted.
CB: Ryan tends to like to be shirtless. But, viewers can expect less of that since it’s the winter months, right?
PY: Yeah. Ryan doesn’t care. If he has an impulse to rip his clothes off, he will, and he certainly does. He certainly does in these cold months.
CB: What can you tell us about where Dallas (Cheryl Hines) and George’s (Jeremy Sisto) romance heads this season?
PY:Dallas and George definitely pursue their romance and it’s fun and it’s really romantic and cute and they seem like such opposites, but it works. And I like to feel it’s the same with Ryan and Tessa, so I keep my fingers crossed with that relationship.
Suburgatory airs Wednesdays at 9:30 PM on ABC.
