Katie Holmes made a much-anticipated return to Broadway Monday night in the first preview performance of Dead Accounts, in which she plays a woman whose life is disrupted when her con-man brother (Norbert Leo Butz) returns home to Cincinnati from New York.

Although the play doesn’t officially show for critics until Nov. 29, Holmes is already drawing praise and applause for her performance, according to a report from People. She is specifically said to have earned cheers from the audience for a “defiant speech about Wall Street greed.”

Also during the play, Holmes planted a huge kiss on her costar , Josh Hamilton, who plays an old friend of Butz’s character.

Holmes previously appeared on Broadway in a 2008 revival of Arthur Miller’s of All My Sons.

Dead Accounts marks her first acting since she finalized her divorce from Tom Cruise in August.
