Election 2012: Donald Trump Fires Back at Brian Williams, Calls Him a 'Dummy... Never a Smart Guy'
Mark Twain is supposed to have warned against fighting the media by saying, "Never pick a fight with a man who buys his ink by the barrel." But how do you referee a media war between a man with unlimited airtime and another with a never-idle Twitter feed?
That's the delicious dilemma facing those who would pick sides between NBC News anchorman Brian Williams and fellow NBC-er Donald Trump. Williams' atypical on-air editorializing against the Celebrity Apprentice guru over his apocalyptic tweets of despair after President Barack Obama's re-election victory Tuesday night has prompted a response from the real estate mogul. Well, actually, more like seven responses, a barrage of angry tweets insulting Williams, calling him a "dummy" who is probably overpaid and who should be jealous of Trump's ratings.
During last night's election coverage, Williams said, "Donald Trump, who has driven well past the last exit to relevance and peered into something closer to irresponsible here, is tweeting tonight," then read some of the Obama-hating tycoon's most dire election reactions. Among Trump's defeatist tweets: "We can't let this happen. We should march on Washington and stop this travesty. Our nation is totally divided!" And, "Lets fight like hell and stop this great and disgusting injustice! The world is laughing at us." And, "This election is a total sham and a travesty. We are not a democracy!" And, "Our country is now in serious and unprecedented trouble...like never before."
Even Trump himself seemed to think some of his own tweets were extreme. He deleted a couple of them, including one that read, "Phoney electoral college made a laughing stock out of our nation. The loser one!" And one reading, "Votes equals a loss… revolution!"@bwilliams knows that I think his newscast has become totally boring so he took a shot at me last night." Then, "The only thing more boring than @bwilliams newscast is his show Rock Center which is totally dying in the ratings—a disaster!" And "@bwilliams--wouldn't you love to have my ratings?" (Probably not, actually. Trump's most recent Apprentice season averaged 7.2 million viewers an episode. Williams has the top-rated nightly newscast, averaging 10.2 million viewers a night as of last week. He also boasted the top-rated election coverage last night.)
Trump continued: "Brian--Thanks dummy--I picked up 70,000 twitter followers yesterday alone. Cable News just passed you in the ratings. @NBCNightlyNews" Also, "Brian, I hope @NBCNightlyNews isn't paying you too much--look at what's happening to nightly news." Plus, "Brian Williams was never a smart guy but always passes himself off as such. People will learn the truth! @NBCNightlyNews"
Still, Trump did find a way to turn the negative attention from Williams (and every election watcher who agreed with him) into a compliment to himself. Posting on Facebook, Trump wrote, "Amazing, various celebrities were far harsher than me with political statements--- but media doesn't care about them. It is a great honor to have the media so focused on my statements when they don't cover others." And back on his Twitter page, he taunted Williams one more time: "Brian, if I'm 'well past the last exit to relevance' how come you spent so much time reading my tweets last night? @NBCNightlyNews"Twitter feed, which he has never actually used. But Williams does have a nightly newscast yet to air on Thursday.
Question: Will Trump feel more insulted if Williams calls him out again on the air... or if Williams ignores him completely?
