On this episode of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) are still figuring out how to be best friends while being on opposite sides of the country.

I found this to be an unusual, but still great, episode of this show. It was unusual in that it focused pretty much solely on Meredith and Cristina, with the rest of the cast playing very minor roles in the story. But, it was great in that it had lots of fantastic moments between these two characters.

Note: Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen Thursday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, “Beautiful Doom.”

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, Cristina and Meredith have one of the most epic (non-romantic) love stories on this show and this episode really let their story shine. I thought it was pretty genius the way they used the split screen while they were talking on the phone, so that we could almost have the experience of having them together.

As for each of their stories, both were intriguing in their own way. First off, there was Meredith with the poor crushed biker who obviously reminded her of Lexie. Meredith wasn’t able to save her sister from being crushed under two tons of metal, but she wasn’t going to let the same thing happen to Melissa. One of the things I like about this show is the fact that I can never predict who is going to die, so I was definitely on the edge of my seat throughout that whole story.

But though I understood why Meredith fought to save Melissa, I’m not in agreement that all of her behavior in treating her patient was based on the plane crash. Was that some of it? Sure. But I also think what we saw in this episode from Meredith is just a natural progression of her character. She’s not a lowly, bumbling intern anymore. Now she’s a wife, a mom, and a well-trained surgeon and I think some of her tenacity was born simply from who she is now.

Cristina’s story was the one that truly surprised me. The first part that surprised me was the fact that I actually found myself liking the whole friendship she had going with Thomas. Not only that, the idea of her being at that other hospital for a while had finally started to grow on me. I liked that she had found someone else to care about and a new mentor that she could trust.

Of course, looking back on it now that’s of course why I should have seen it coming. I should have known that Thomas’ days were numbered the moment that I started to care about him. I mean this show has done it to me time and time again: Killed off a character that I care about. Why should this time be any different?

But though Cristina’s story did break my heart a little, in the end, I was kind of happy that it happened the way that it did. All she had in that place was Thomas. And when he died, I could see how it would be the final straw that would get her on a plane home. That’s where she belongs and I’m glad that she’s back with her best friend. I’m also hopeful that this means that she and Owen (Kevin McKidd) might get back together.

Buzz Moments

OMG!: Thomas staring at Cristina and then dropping dead in the middle of surgery. I literally screamed, “Oh my God!” when it happened.

Thank you, TV gods.: Meredith opening her front door to find a very inebriated Cristina standing there.

Awk-ward: Meredith getting peed on by a toddler. Talk about a rough start to your day.

Hotness: Maybe it’s the Karev-lover in me, but I thought his hotness factor went up by a few points when he volunteered to babysit for Zola. I know he’s in Peds now, but it’s not like he makes that a habit and I found it very sweet.

Fab-u-lous: Cristina’s huge puffy coat and her matching fur hat. I wish I live in a place cold enough to wear that ensemble.

Can. Not. Wait.: To see how things are going to change (or should I say, go back to normal) now that Cristina is back at Seattle Grace.

Celebuzz Meter (1-10): 9 Cristina is back!
