There were several surprises last week when FOX’s The X Factor revealed the rankings for its Top 12 performers. And even the show’s lone country act, Tate Stevens, seemed taken aback when he was announced in the No. 1 spot.

“I got to tell you my goal was just to make it through the next week, to be here this week,” Stevens tells reporters on Monday. “So, when the fans gave me the most votes, it was crazy. That was awesome. I feel great, but it speaks volumes for country music fans. They’re the best.”

Stevens isn’t taking the position for granted, though. “Now, we’re back at zero this week,” the 37-year-old says. “Everybody’s on the same line and I obviously set the bar high for myself last week and I got to try to at least get there again.”

Stevens got his fair share of ribbing from the other contestants about being in the top spot and he says he knows that the other performers are gunning for him.

“So No. 12 could be No. 1 this week,” the Raymore, Mo. resident says. “No. 1 could be No. 12 this week. So, I think that’s the good thing. I think it brings out that competitive drive in people.”

The X Factor airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 PM on FOX.
