Adele Makes Music History as ‘21’ Hits 10 Million Sales Mark in U.S.

Adele now belongs in a category that includes ‘N Sync and the Backstreet Boys.

The 24-year-old British singer’s second studio album, 21, has hit the 10 million sales mark in the U.S. — 92 weeks after its release, Nielsen SoundScan reports.

The album, released in January 2011, contains several of Adele’s megahits, including “Rolling in the Deep,” “Someone Like You,” “Rumour Has It” and “Set Fire to the Rain.”

Since SoundScan began collecting music sales data in 1991, only 21 albums, including 21, have reached the 10 million mark. Two albums have achieved the milestone faster than Adele’s release.

Justin Timberlake and the boys from ‘N Sync reached the magic number in 2001 with No Strings Attached during its 43rd week of release, Billboard reports. The Backstreet Boys’ 1999 album Millennium hit 10 million after 39 weeks.

Earlier this year, 21 earned six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Rolling in the Deep.” The album has also earned Adele three American Music Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards and two Brits.
