Charlize Theron to Headline ‘Sympathy for Lady Vengeance’ Remake

As Spike Lee helms a remake of the dark action-thriller Oldboy, Hollywood sets its sights on another Park Chan-wook film.

Charlize Theron will produce and star in the remake of 2005’s Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.

Annapurna Pictures announced the film via press release on Wednesday, which will feature a script written by Oscar-winning scribe William Monahan (The Departed).

Theron will take on the titular role, with the story centering on a woman “who for reasons of her own completes a prison term for a murder she did not commit, reemerging to punish the killer, and avenge the dead.”

Fans of the original film know it to be the final chapter in Park’s “Vengeance Trilogy”, after Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy.

The press release is unclear as to whether or not Monahan, who recently directed London Boulevard, will direct this film or just write it.
