It’s official — Kate Middleton is pregnant! While the world speculates whether it will be a girl or a boy — or one of each (could it be twins?) — her fashion following is wondering how the Duchess of Cambridge will dress her bump.

A lot has changed in the world of maternity fashion since the last palace pregnancy. When her would-be mother-in-law, Princess Diana was pregnant with Prince William and Prince Harry, she hid her bump under tented dresses that would be considered moo moos compared to today’s bump-baring maternity fashions.

So how will the newest mom-to-be dress her bump to fit her modern yet ladylike style? And who will be designing Middleton’s maternity wardrobe?

With a little one on the way, the posh princess will be trading her usual tailored silhouettes for roomier empire-waist styles to accommodate her burgeoning bump.

But don’t expect Middleton giving up her L.K. Bennett heels anytime soon, which at under three inches, are a perfectly reasonable height for a mom-to-be to carry off.

Though none of the Duchess’ favorite designers — Alexander McQueen, Reiss, Jenny Packham and Alice Temperley — have separate maternity lines, we have no doubt they’ll jump at the chance to design custom creations to accommodate Middleton’s growing bump during her pregnancy. And some of the Duchess’ go-to labels like Diane von Furstenberg and Issa offer stretchy styles in their ready-to-wear lines that the svelte princess can easily wear long into her pregnancy.

Even with a slew of designers and royal seamstresses at her fingertips, the practical princess is likely to continue mixing high- and low-end pieces, especially since some of her favorite British brands, like TopShop and ASOS, have maternity lines.

To help the royal mom-to-be kick off her pregnancy in style, we’ve compiled a shopping list of Middleton-worthy maternity fashions that won’t require a royal baby budget (check it out here).
