ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy has never been afraid to kill off characters for the sake of some good drama.

Whether it’s a patient we’ve just met on an episode, or a character that has been around for a few seasons and has won the hearts of many fans, creator Shonda Rhimes has no trouble ending them if the story calls for it.

Some of you may have already heard the rumors that we’re about to lose another beloved cast member very soon on the show. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but we at Celebuzz did want to take a moment to look back at some of the most heartbreaking deaths that Grey’s Anatomy has seen over the years.

Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen every single episode of Grey’s Anatomy over its past nine seasons. Yes, there have been that many deaths.

Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), was one of the first significant deaths that had many fans in an uproar and plenty more sobbing their eyes out. In some ways, it felt like Denny’s death was the one that opened the door to what would become many more to come.

After Denny, fans had to suffer through plenty of heartbreaking deaths, including main characters such as the incredibly sweet George O’Malley (T.R. Knight), the lovely Lexi Grey (Chyler Leigh), and perhaps not well-loved but just as significant Percy (Robert Baker), as well as not-so main characters like the brave bomb-tech Dylan (Kyle Chandler) and the tragic train crash victim Bonnie (Monica Keena).

So, sit back and take a look at a gallery of the most heartbreaking deaths on the show. Be prepared to have the Kleenex handy, because we sure went through a few when we were making it.

Grey’s Anatomyis set to air its midseason finale on Thursday, December 13, and we know for a fact that one character seen on that episode will meet their demise when the show comes back in January 2013.

Any guesses on whose days are numbered? Do you think fans’ hearts can take losing another beloved character so soon after losing Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) just a few short episodes ago?
