“I think they’ve had the hardest thing to overcome, because they weren’t a group,” Simon Cowelltold reporters after Wednesday’s show of the group formed by the judges.
“They work really, really hard and in the last two weeks I could feel a change when people finally got [them].” he continued. “They changed their names three times. They didn’t know each other three months ago. But, for them to gel in the way that they did and how they performed tonight, it was incredible. They looked like proper pop stars.”
In fact, the talent show’s judge and executive producer said they remind him of another group who actually didn’t win their season of The X Factor UK, but went on to big things.
“They remind me of One Direction in terms of their personalities,” Cowell told us. “They’re fun to work with, hardworking, opinionated, but that’s what you want with a group. And I think there’s a gap in the market for a girl group like this.”
Simon says Fifth Harmony did “brilliantly” in their finale performances and he admits he owes part of that to fellow judge and sometime combatant, Demi Lovato.
“I was amazed how well Demi sang on the duet,” he said with a smirk about the performance of “Give Your Heart a Break.” “I mean she wanted to prove a point. And I said to her, ‘You had your little diva moment, didn’t you?’ She was terrific. It went according to plan. I always think after, ‘Could I have done more? Could the girls have done more?’ I don’t think we could have done any more.”
The X Factor Season 2 finale results airs Thursday at 8 PM on FOX – with guest performers One Direction.
