The mother of Jason Hoppy, who split with his reality star wife Bethenny Frankel on Dec. 23, has leapt to her son’s defense, amid reports the relationship’s downfall came about because he was jealous of her fame.

“My son is a wonderful, wonderful person,” a saddened Carol Hoppy told Celebuzz, in an exclusive interview.

“I’m sad at what he is having to go through just now because he is a great guy.”

What the New York businessman is going through is a lot, at this time: in addition to the separation from Frankel, whom he married March 2010 when she was seven months pregnant, the pair now need to co-parent their daughter Bryn Hoppy, 2.

Plus… he’s dealing with reports that he “felt emasculated” in the relationship.

Carol Hoppy was reluctant to speak out further in the wake of the shock announcement, in which Frankel, 42, said the split  “is an immensely painful and heartbreaking time for us.”

However, Frankel’s mother, Bernadette Birk  who has long been estranged from her daughter — told Celebuzz she was taken aback by the breakdown of her second marriage.

“This is the first I have heard of it,” Birk said. “I did not know nor never met Jason Hoppy, so I do not know if he was a good husband or not.”

Birk’s relationship with 42-year-old Frankel has also broken down over the years.

She said, “I no longer have a relationship with Bethenny, so I really do not have a reaction to the news of her separating from him.

“I do not know if Bethenny or I will ever talk again. That’s just life sometimes, I’m afraid.”

In a 2011 interview, the newly-minted talk show host revealed she and her husband previously almost split because of the intense pressures of her climbing career.

“We’ve been scared,” Frankel told PEOPLE. “The second year of marriage was not easy. We hit bottom, [but] we came out the other side.

“I think we have what it takes to make it work,” she added.

“I don’t have a backup plan. It’s not like shopping for shoes and getting a new pair. That’s not what it’s about.”

Frankel, who was previously married to entertainment executive Peter Sussman, met Hoppy in late 2008. The former personal trainer proposed to her 11 months later with a huge 6.5 carats diamond ring.

What do you think — should Bethenny Frankel try to make her marriage to Jason Hoppy work?
